Ahead of the start of panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the governor’s administration is set to announce an honorarium for sarpanchs and panchs in the State.An official told Greater Kashmir that the State Administrative Council headed by Governor Satya Pal Malik is likely to clear a proposal providing an honorarium to the village heads and their deputies during its meeting at Raj Bhavan Jammu on Wednesday. The proposal has been mooted by the rural development department.
Earlier, a sarpanch was entitled to monthly sitting fee of Rs 2,000 while this amount fixed for a panch was Rs 1000.The RDD proposal will have massive financial implications, according to officials
Jammu and Kashmir has 35029 panch constituencies and 4483 panchayat halqas.The notifications for first three phases of panchayat polls have already been issued.
Pertinently, the governor’s administration recently conducted the urban local body polls in four-phases from October 8 to October 16. These polls saw the voter turnout of 4.8 percent in Kashmir, even as the overall polling across the state was 35 percent.
