Bharatiya Janata Party said Wednesday they can tie up with Sajjad Lone’s Peoples Conference for Mayorship of Srinagar.
“We are talking to our own people and some independents regarding Srinagar Mayor post,” Ravinder Raina, the saffron party’s state president told Greater Kashmir on the side lines of a function organised to celebrate its “victory” in the recently concluded Urban Local Body polls.
“At some stage we can talk to Peoples Conference also for the post of the mayor.”Raina said BJP will try to get the numbers before staking claim for the Mayorship of the capital city and claimed to be in touch with several independent victorious candidates from the ULB elections.Things will be clear in some days.”
The senior BJP leader said his party was hopeful that in the upcoming panchayat elections they will do better than ULB elections. “People on the ground are working hard for better victory in Panchayat elections,” Raina said.
He denied reports that some BJP candidates had joined rival Congress party or other mainstream parties. “Something of that sort has happened in Sopore,” Raina however conceded, adding that it happened under threat. Responding to questions about possibility of government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP state unit president said his party first want panchayat elections to be peaceful like the ULB polls.
“Anything can be thought once panchayat elections are over,” Raina said, assuring the candidates that BJP will ensure their security and safety.
Earlier, BJP national general secretary, Ram Madhav addressed the party candidates who were declared successful in ULB polls. “We are happy that BJP has finally started to gain in Kashmir,” Madhav told his party workers. “I am hopeful in panchayat elections BJP [will] gain more and more.”
Congratulating the candidates, Madhav, who arrived in valley on Wednesday morning, said the BJP would leave no stone unturned for empowering the grass root level leaders. “You are the people who will take Modi Jis’ development programme to every house hold,” Madhav told the recently elected urban local bodies’ members of his party.
“We will try our best to ensure your safety and security.”
