Believed to be the 40-day period of harsh winter, this year the Chillai-Kalan failed miserably in making any impact and ended today on an equally weak note as the night temperature rose across the Valley.
During Chillai-Kalan, the possibility of snowfall has traditionally been maximum in Kashmir, but this year Valley hardly saw any precipitation during its tenure. Though there was downpour when the period began and ended this season, but it was one of the driest in four decades.
Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 3.5 degrees Celsius, an official of the Met department said here.
He said all weather stations in the valley – except Pahalgam and Gulmarg – recorded minimum temperatures above the freezing point.
Gulmarg ski-resort recorded a low of minus 3.6 Celsius, while Pahalgam resort recorded a low of minus 2.5 Celsius last night, the official said.
Kargil town of Ladakh region continued to freeze at minus 15.0 Celsius for the third consecutive night, while the nearby Leh town recorded a low of minus 7.1 Celsius.
