Divisional Comm: Shift illegal vendors to streamline traffic

Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Baseer Ahmad Khan on Wednesday said the continuous drive against roadside encroachments, illegal vendors and violators of traffic laws was showing a positive effect.He said the drive needed to be sustained to achieve the goal of hassle-free movement of vehicles and pedestrians.The Divisional Commissioner was speaking at a meeting held to review the overall traffic scenario in Kashmir.The official directed up to six drives per day by the authorities concerned to get rid of illegal vendors at Lal Chowk, Hari Singh High Street and other places in the city. He also ordered removal of all illegal vendors and shifting them to vending zones earmarked for them.He also directed imposing a fine of Rs 40,000 on shopkeepers who kept their merchandise outside shops. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation was directed to stop external renovation works undertaken by shopkeepers without permission.The official said the dedication of roadside paid parking had given positive dividends.“Twelve such parkings are already functional and three more are being finalised in the current week,” the official said.The Divisional Commissioner directed officials to make 47 parkings functional within the next 15 days. “Further, intelligent traffic lights will be made functional by the end of the month,” he said.
