HC seeks info on drug de-addiction measures by Centre

The High Court on Friday directed Union Home Ministry to inform it by May 21 about the steps taken to curb the menace of drug addiction and providing of drug de-addiction centres in Jammu and Kashmir.

A division bench of Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar and Justice M K Hanjura directed the Union Home Ministry through its joint secretary (J&K Affairs) to inform the court about the steps aiming to curb drug menace and de-addiction centers in J&K.

“We expect the newly added respondent (joint secretary J&K Affairs, Government of lndia) to respond to the proposal of the State Government keeping in mind the situation prevailing in the State for establishing drug de-addiction centres in its various districts as indicated in the letter dated 16.02.2018 of the special director general of police, J&K,” the court said, while hearing a Public Interest Litigation.

The direction came after the court added the joint secretary as party respondent in the case.
