Killing of mentally unsound man in ‘encounter’ last year; Police now say he was innocent..

After killing a mentally unsound person last year, police have now said that the victim was innocent and was not involved in any criminal or subversive activities.Shahid Ahmad Mir, 21, was gunned down by government forces in an alleged fake encounter in Hafrada forests of Handwara in August last year.

A petition was filed by chairperson International Forum for Justice and Human Rights, Ahsan Untoo, before the State Human Rights Commission stating the family of the youth strongly contests the army claims that Shahid was associated with militancy directly or indirectly.Also, the family has asked for in-depth investigation to unmask the truth behind the fake encounter.

The police in their reply to the SHRC states, “In this context report received from DIG North Kashmir-Baramulla who is now inspector general of Kashmir, reveals that on 23.8.2017 Mst Gulshan Begum w/o Bashir Ahmad Mir R/O Darilpayeen appeared in police station Vilgam and produced a written application to the effect that his son namely Shahid Bashir Mir is missing since 21.8.2017, who is mentally sick.”
