LA to consider bills seeking prohibition

Legislative Assembly today considered two Private Members’ Bills seeking — to prohibit the advertisement, sale, purchase, consumption, manufacture, distribution, import, export of liquor in the state of Jammu and Kashmir moved by NC Mal from Ganderbal Sheikh Ishfaq Ahmad and Congress MLA from Inderwal G M Saroori.

As the bills were presented in the house, the opposition members equivocally supported the bills seeking ban on liquor but the ruling PDP-BJP alliance was divided over the issue.

Opposition questioned the opposition of BJP members to bills seeking ban on liquor with the argument the BJP government in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Modi, has already banned liquor.

The Law Minister Abdul Haq Khan, who himself had presented a bill on liquor ban during the reign of Omar Abdullah led NC-Congress coalition government, stood up and said that government has no objection if the bill is introduced for consideration by the government.
