a well-known footballer of J &K Majid Arshad Khan, who had joined LeT, just few days back has surrendered to J&K police. Surrender of Majid will cause a death blow to the efforts of LeT to energise the weakening militancy in J&K. The reason cited is a video of Majid’s wailing mother which had gone viral on social media asking him to come back. This surrender is being seen as a big success by security forces in weaning away the youngsters from militancy. Interestingly, LeT has chosen to downplay this surrender by declaring that Majid being the only son of the parents was being released. Whatever be the reason, the fact remains that surrenders by disenchanted youths choosing militancy is always welcome and in the interest of Kashmir.
The Indian Army, Jammu And Kashmir Police and CRPF on Thursday had announced that they would give a chance to local terrorists in Kashmir if they are willing to abandon terrorism and join the mainstream. The joint announcement was made after security forces arrested three local terrorists during an operation in Kulgam district.
One of the three captured terrorists Shamsul Vikar is a popular cricketer and student of a prominent school in Kashmir. Shamsul was arrested with three rifles when he was trying to flee in a vehicle. Shamsul Vikar, 19 had become a terrorist in March this year. His picture had surfaced on social media a few days back, showing him with an assault rifle inside a stadium in Anantnag.
“Our offer to take arrest and accept surrender is there even during fierce encounters. We appeal local militants to come back, shun militancy and Join mainstream” said Zulfikar Hassan, the Inspector General of CRPF.
“We could have killed the terrorists after we lost an army soldier during the encounter. But we gave him a chance to come out alive,” said Munir Khan, IGP Kashmir.
He said one of the captured terrorists was injured during the encounter and the security forces shifted him to a hospital to treat his injuries.
The humanitarian approach of the security forces need to be understood and availed of by the young militants who want settlement of Kashmir issue.
