New IGP Traffic issues directions for decongestion at peak hours.

The new traffic police chief, Alok Kumar Tuesday directed officers to exhibit high sense of responsibility while dealing with violators of traffic rules.Kumar was speaking during his maiden meeting with traffic police officers and enforcing authorities here after taking over as inspector general of police for traffic.

For easing traffic during peak hours, the IGP Traffic said he was working with relevant authorities for opening one side of Jehangir-Chowk to Naaz Crossing for movement of vehicular traffic.

Presently, the stretch of the road between Jahangir Chowk and Naaz Crossing is closed for traffic to facilitate construction of the Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh flyover.

Kumar also gave directions for frequent awareness programmes to be conducted in schools and colleges for sensitising youths towards traffic rules and driving behaviour on the roads.

Traffic police officers were also directed liaise with the management of coaching centres for staggering their timings to help reduce congestion during peak hours.Traffic officials who man the roads were asked to wear florescent jackets during night hours for visibility and safety.

“IGP traffic stressed upon the officers to take all necessary measures to smoothen the flow of traffic in City Srinagar and all areas of Kashmir by strictly enforcing relevant laws with zero tolerance against visible offences,” a police spokesman said.

The spokesman said Kumar sought assurances from the officers for a visible change on the ground with a people friendly attitude and to ensure that technology oriented gadgetry and other implements be provided to the traffic officers for regulation and enforcement in the near future.

Later, the Kumar reviewed the traffic arrangements of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi  (SAW) and visited  Hazratbal Shrine to inspect arrangements and parking slots for devotees.
