NIA quizzes Salahuddin’s sons in ‘funding case’

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday questioned four sons of Hizbul Mujahideen chief and chairman United Jihad Council Syed Salahuddin in connection with an alleged funding case.
“Four sons of Salahuddin were questioned today by the probe agency,” inspector general of police, NIA, Alok Mittal told Greater Kashmir. “Nobody among them was arrested.”
Those who were questioned include Dr. Syed Abdul Wahid, Abdul Mueed, Syed Khalid and Syed Farooq.
However, a senior police official from district police Budgam said that two more persons whom he identified as Muzamil Khan of Darmuna Soibugh and Syed Muhammad Yusuf of Hyderpora, Srinagar were summoned for questioning by the NIA.
The alleged funding case registered by the NIA in April 2011, officials said related to the “transfer of money from Pakistan to Jammu and Kashmir through hawala channels via Delhi, which the agency believes was used in funding terrorism and secessionist activities.”
Earlier, in the same case Salahuddin’s son Syed Shahid Yousuf, an employee in agriculture department was arrested by the NIA. Yousuf, 42, was posted as agricultural assistant in Budgam district when he was arrested on October 24.
The NIA has alleged that Yousuf used to receive funds through a US-based international wire transfer company from Aijaz Ahmed Bhat, another accused in the case “who is absconding and based in Saudi Arabia.”
The NIA claimed he had received nearly Rs. 4.5 lakh through eight international wire transfers.
In July last year, the NIA arrested seven separatist leaders, including Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s son-in-law Altaf Ahmed Shah, in a probe linked to funding of militancy and unrest in Kashmir.
Others who were arrested included Ayaz Akbar and Mehrajuddin Kalwal, Shahid-ul-Islam, Nayeem Khan Peer Saifullah and Bita Karatay.
