National Conference vice- president and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah on Friday expressed gratitude to Government of India for extending the railway line to Kupwara district.
“I take this opportunity to thank Piyush Goyal ji for acceding to the popular demand and starting the process of connecting Kupwara district with rest of the valley through a rail link,” Omar said.
Asking for a similar railway link to the Pir Panchal areas including the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri, he said, “We have been hearing that the survey for Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch railway line was going on and Northern Railways would be furnishing detailed information to the Union Railways Ministry in this regard. I request Piyush ji to expedite the process. The economic activities in these districts will bump up and receive an impetus with the coming of railways,” he said.
Meanwhile, former minister and senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Haq Khan on also hailed the Government of India’s initiative to expand Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link up to Kupwara in north Kashmir.
In a statement Khan said that the decision will go a long way in ensuring an overall development of the Kupwara region and generating employment for the locals there. He added that the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti as Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister had personally take this up at the highest level and rigorously pursued it with the centre and the concerned Ministry.
