Police identify 28 private schools for reservation for their wards..

Despite opposition by private school body, the J&K police has identified at least 28 ‘reputed’ private schools including 10 in Kashmir, for seeking reservation in admission and fee cut for the wards of cops working in J&K.
The police department as per official documents has sought 30 percent concession in fee and 20 percent reservation of seats in the shortlisted schools for the wards of police personnel “so that they can avail quality education.”However, the move has evoked opposition from the private school body who believes it will set in a “dangerous trend” in the education sector.
“We can’t provide relaxation on the basis of profession. Today it is police; tomorrow CRPF will approach and may be BSF or any other force. The reservation on basis of profession is unheard of,” said chairman Private School Association Kashmir (PSAK) G N Var.
He said schools can provide concession in fee or reservation in admission only if there is a legislation or a government order in this regard.
“It is a direct interference by the police in the private education sector and an attack on the autonomy of the schools. Police has its welfare fund and also its own school,” Var said.
The shortlisted schools include: Burn Hall, Presentation Convent School, Green Valley Educational Institute, Tyndale Biscoe, Mallinson Girls Higher Secondary school, Salfia Muslim School, Woodlands House School, DPS Athwajan, Iqra International and New Era Pub School from Srinagar district.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, principal Tyndale Biscoe and Mallinson Girls Higher Secondary School Parvaiz Kaul said they have already given 15 admissions in nursery classes to the wards of policemen this year in both the schools (Biscoe and Mallinson) but can’t provide any fee concession to them.
“Despite providing 15 admissions this year to the police wards, they were pressing us for more which we refused. Admission was not given on reservation but we gave preference as per merit to the wards of cops among equals,” he said.
“If some students got A grade in interview, we considered kids of police personnel considering their hard life,” he said.
Kaul said the school won’t keep any reservation or give fee concession for the police in every class. “They are earning well and have good resources so we can’t provide any concession or reservation to their wards.” he said.
Director general of police (DGP) S P Vaid when contacted down played the issue and said police has not issued any order for seeking reservation for admission in private schools.“We are only requesting them and it is their choice if they give admission to our kids. It is their private business and how can we order them. It will be completely their own decision if they think police is helping them (private schools),” he said.
