Shopian Killing: Police register murder case against Army

Police has registered a murder case against Army personnel in connection with a firing incident in Shopian district that left two persons dead and nine injured.

The personnel belong to the 10 Garhwal unit of the Army, including a Major rank officer, Maj Aditya have been mentioned in the FIR, officials said.

The case was registered under sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder), the officials said.

The killing of two youth in army fire has attracted wide-spread condemnation and Mehbooba Mufti-led state government has also ordered a magisterial probe into the incident even as a defence spokesman claimed that the soldiers opened firing in self-defence.

It may be recalled here that two civilians were killed on Saturday and another injured critically when Army personnel fired on a group of protestors in Shopian district of south Kashmir.

Several other protestors too were injured in the firing.

Javaid Ahmad Bhat, son of Abdul Rashid Bhat resident of Balpora Shopian, and Suhail Javid Lone, son of Javaid Ahmad Lone, resident of Ganowpora, succumbed to injuries later.

Another youth Rayees Ahmad Ganaie, son of Mohammad Yousuf is said to be in a critical condition.
