Show restraint on borders: Geelani to India, Pakistan

Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani today expressed deep concern over the loss of precious lives in the shelling on the line of control (LoC), appealing to India and Pakistan to demonstrate restraint and wisdom and play a constructive role for peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue, which, according to him, poses a threat to world peace.
Terming the Kashmir issue as bone of contention between India and Pakistan, Geelani, in a statement today, said, “Sincere steps are needed to resolve this dispute. Unless Kashmir dispute is resolved in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of people, the risk of collision between the two nuclear powers will remain there and it would be devastating not only for the region but for the whole world.”

He said, “Indian forces have created mayhem and turned the Jammu and Kashmir into slaughter house.”

Hailing people for their commitment and determination, Geelani said, “Despite atrocities perpetrated by forces people are braving bullets and pellets and this serves a message for the oppressors that they can never suppress our aspirations or force us to submission.”

He said, “The Indian authorities should shun stubborn approach and read writing on the wall. Their rhetoric about so-called development and construction of projects can never lure people. Sadak, Pani, Bijli and power projects are no solution to Kashmir issue.”

“The valiant people of Kashmir have proved, time and again, that no amount of torture could dissuade them from pursuing their legitimate and inalienable right to self-determination. Despite India utilizing all its resources and military might during the last 70 years, the issue is there and not an iota of change seems to have happened on the ground,” he said.

Meanwhile, Geelani, who continues to be under house arrest, was again not allowed to offer Friday prayers, terming it is a brazen interference in religious affairs and even today in the month of Ramadan Geelani Sahab was barred from offering Friday prayers. He continues to be virtually in jail.”
