Talat, Dhar VCs of Kashmir, Jammu varsities.

Governor N N Vohra on Wednesday appointed Professor Talat Ahmad as the vice chancellor of the University of Kashmir (KU) while Professor Manoj Kumar Dhar has been appointed as the vice chancellor of Jammu University.

The appointment of both has been made for a period of five years “with effect from the date the vice chancellor takes over the charge.”

The tenure the VCs in the state was extended from three to five years after an amendment was made in the J&K Universities Act by the previous government. A legislation was passed to amend the Act to the extent that the word “three” for the term of VC shall be substituted by the word “five”.

Prof Talat said he will join the varsity as soon as he was relieved from Jamia Millia Islami University where he is the serving VC. He has earlier served as the VC Kashmir University from 2012 to 2014.

He was given a three-year extension, six months ahead of the completion of his first term, but was soon appointed as the vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia for next five years. His term at the Jamia is ending in February, 2019.

The hunt for new KU Vice Chancellor began in October 2017 when the three-year tenure of incumbent vice chancellor Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi ended.

On Wednesday, Prof Manoj Dhar took over as the VC of Jammu University soon after the order was issued, relieving his predecessor R D Sharma.

“In exercise of the powers vested under section 12 of the Kashmir and Jammu University Act 1969, the Governor has been pleased to appoint Prof. Manoj Kumar Dhar, Professor biotechnology of Jammu University as the vice-chancellor of Jammu University for a period of five years with effect from the date he takes over charge, on the terms and conditions to be notified separately,” reads an order issued by registrar JU, Meenakshi Kilam.

Prof Dhar is a Kashmiri Pandit from Baramulla and was born on November 17, 1964. He has had all his education right up to PhD from the state and has served in Jammu University as controller and was founding head of school of biotechnology.

Prof Dhar was awarded as distinguished scientist by society for plant research, Meerut in 2009, annual quality assurance award by the JU in 2007, Prof. Hira Lal Chakravorty award by the Indian Science Congress Association in 2005, Professor P N Mehra Memorial award 2004 and Prof. Y S Murty Gold Medal by the Indian Botanical Society in 2002.
