Torching panchayatghars attempt to derail polls: Police.

The police said on Thursday that burning panchayatghars “is an attempt to derail the poll process”, and concrete steps have been taken to prevent such incidents.

“Some miscreants are doing it at the behest of those who doesn’t want panchayat institutions to flourish. We have registered cases in all the incidents and investigations are on,” additional director general of police (ADGP) law and order, security, Munir Khan told Greater Kashmir.

He said investigations reveal that “some miscreants are torching panchayatghars at the behest of militants”.At least six panchayatghars were torched in Shopian, Pulwama and Budgam during the past one week.

“We have registered FIRs into all incidents and will arrest all miscreants,” the police officer said.He said concrete steps have been taken to prevent attacks of panchayatghars. “We will ensure no such incident takes place. For that a series of steps have already been taken which can’t be disclosed,” Khan said.

“We will ensure area domination in the areas where we feel there is a chance of attack on panchayat institutions.”

Panchayat polls in J&K will commence from November to elect 4400 sarpanchs and 29000 panchs.

The government is contemplating Rs 10 lakh insurance cover to all those would join the poll fray in local bodies elections in a bid to infuse confidence among the candidates. J&K governor S P Malik has already approved the proposal. However, Sarpanchs and Panchs have demanded conducive atmosphere for polls rather than the insurance cover or other monetary benefits.
