Perhaps not to be seen in the company of people who support those who raped and murdered an eight-year-old girl in Kathua in January, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday declared it would not support the Jammu bandh call given by many social and religious organisations.
“We are not supporting bandh call. The things in Jammu are being complicated by the Congress,” said BJP state general secretary (Organizations), Ashok Kaul. He said BJP from day one of the incident has termed it a heinous crime. “There is no change in our stand and those involved should be punished.”
However, he made light of the effort of lawyers to stop the police from filing a charge sheet against the accused. “These are small things and they do not need importance.”
Kaul slammed his party’s coalition partner, the People’s Democratic Party, for bungling the investigation into the Asifa rape and murder case. “First it was District police Kathua solely involved in the investigation. Later judiciary and Special investigation team were involved. Finally the case was handed over to Crime branch” he said.
He denied that some of the BJP ministers were part of a protest march organised by HIndu Akita Manch. “Both the ministers had visited the area to calm the atmosphere and to ensure that harmony between the two communities prevails despite the charged atmosphere. Both the ministers as responsible representatives of the people and they visited the area to douse the flames of hatred and animosity between the two communities.”
